2016 Beauty Favorites- Part One

Welcome to the first post of 2017 my dear readers! I hope you all started the New Year on a good note and that you wore lots of glitter on New Year’s Eve! I went to a PJs party at my friends’ house (but it totally didn’t stop me from wearing glitter on my eyes!).

The title of today’s post might sound a little cliche, however, I really enjoy reading posts about other bloggers 2016 makeup and skincare favorites. That is why today I bring you my very own 2016 Makeup Favorites- Part 1.

Part 1 consists of makeup and skincare items. Part 2 will concentrate on lip products and nails. I am almost 100% sure that all the products that I mention in this post actually launched in 2016 (and if not, that’s when I discovered them).

Without further ado, let’s start with my favorite foundation.

The title of The Best 2016 Foundation goes to Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick. 2016 was definitely big for stick foundations. They are easy to apply, handy and innovative. Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick delivers medium to full coverage, it’s easily buildable but doesn’t look cakey. It looks natural, conceals redness and blemishes perfectly. It is quite pricey as it retails for $46.00 and you don’t get a lot of product but a little does go a long way! This foundation is waterproof, sweat proof and lasts on me a whole day. My favorite way to apply it is with a blending brush with really dense hair or with a wet beauty sponge for a lighter coverage.

The title of The Best Concealer of 2016 goes to Tarte Shape Tape Contour Concealer. This is a product that is always out of stock and finding it anywhere is almost impossible. I hunted for it for a weeks before I finally snatched the last tube in my shade at my local Ulta. This concealer is amazing! The shade is perfect, the consistency is amazing, so is the application and longevity. I use it for hiding dark under eye circles and redness around my nose and it works like a charm. It has amazing coverage, it’s very creamy and doesn’t set into the lines. I like applying it with a wet beauty sponge or with my fingers. It retails for $24 and if you can find it in your shade, pick one up. Or two- I promise, you won’t be disappointed. Tarte Shape Tape Contour Concealer is a beauty product I never want to be without!

The title of The Best Eyeshadow Palette of 2016 goes to Anastasia Beverly Hills  Modern Renaissance Palette ($42.00). Again, probably one of the most hyped up makeup launches of the past year that totally did not disappoint. This category is usually tough for me to judge because I love my eyeshadow palettes more than any other makeup product and yet, ABH Modern Renaissance earned a spot in my heart right from the first use. I have known ABH for their amazing brow products before but I had never tried their eyeshadows. Modern Renaissance Palette is a gem. Although it consists of a lot of neutral shades, it’s not your everyday nude palette. It’s a nude palette with an edge as it has a bunch of red, pink and rusty shades that are all extremely wearable and suit every complexion. Not only the shade selection is spot on but so is the quality, the texture. The palette has matte and shimmery shades that are equally good and easily blendable.

The title of The Best Mascara of 2016 goes to Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara ($26.00). It’s hard for me to find a mascara that would truly amaze me, that would deliver all that I am looking for. Marc Jacobs’ Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara almost has it all. It is dramatic, adds amazing length and volume to the lashes, it holds curl really good, it doesn’t flake. It is also smudge proof but it’s not waterproof. And it’s my only complaint. Because my eyes are very sensitive, I can only wear waterproof mascaras or I will look like a panda. This mascara won’t last through a sea of tears but can definitely take on some happy tears or rain. The bottom line is that after I finished a tube of it, and tried a bunch of other highly rated mascaras, nothing else came close to amazing me as much as Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir Major Volume did. Now if it ever comes in a waterproof version, I will declare its Holy Grail status.

The title of The Best Blush of 2016 goes to Becca Cosmetics Shimmering Skin Perfector Luminous Blush ($34.00). Ok, where do I even start? Inspired by the makeup fanatics favorite Becca Shimmering Skin Perfectors the blushes combine the most gorgeous color, amazing pigmentation and beautiful multidimensional glow. The shade that I own is Camelia, is a ballerina pink, that is a pretty universal shade that goes with anything. I love that it looks really natural on my cheeks, can be easily built up and that it lasts absolutely all day.

The title of The Best Drugstore Products of 2016 goes to 3 products, all from L’Oreal Paris – Infallible Pro-Glow Foundation, Voluminous Lash Primer and Lineur Intense Felt Tip Eyeliner.

The Infallible Pro-Glow Foundation ($12.99) has become my go-to-everyday foundation. It is very natural looking, has good coverage, lasts a really long time and the shade #202 Creamy Natural matches my skin note perfectly. I really like how it looks on my skin. The only thing I am not a huge fan of is the fact that when I apply it, it has a strong alcohol smell (and alcohol is one of the ingredients in this foundation), however I haven’t experienced any dryness caused by it.

The Voluminous Lash Primer ($8.99) was a product I purchased on a complete whim, right after its launched. Until then I had never used a lash primer as I always thought it was an unnecessary step in my already elaborate makeup routine. However, it does make a huge difference in the way my lashes look. It adds a lot of volume to any mascara I put on top of it and although it is white, it never peaks through my black mascara. I love it so much that even on a day I commit myself to a quick makeup look, it’s a step I don’t skip anymore. This L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Primer is a true drugstore gem!

Lastly, L’Oreal Paris Lineur Intense Felt Tip Liquid Eyeliner in Carbon Black ($9.99). I love its felt tip that makes creating a perfect winged liner pretty easy, it doesn’t come off until you remove it with a really good makeup remover. Mostly though, I love it for its high gloss finish which is absolutely beautiful and, in that respect, I even like it more than Kat Von D’s Tattoo Liner a.k.a “my absolutely favorite black liner of all times”.

Last, but not least, my two favorite Skincare products of 2016. Why only two you ask? Well, the main reason being that I don’t really feel like I have enough expertise to write about skincare and I find it difficult to measure how effective  a skincare product is. I am no Caroline Hirons or Anne from Linda.Libra.Loca after all. However, I felt like there were two products that I discovered in 2016 that made a really big difference in my skincare routine that I just had to mention in this post.

The first one is Tatcha One Step Camelia Cleansing Oil discovered by me quite accidentally. I tried it after purchasing Tatcha Bestsellers Set from Sephora. You might remember my frequently declared love for Garnier’s Nourishing Cleansing Oil (that’s now discontinued for some reason). Tatcha One Step Camelia Cleansing Oil is at least 100 times better. It’s gentle and extremely effective- it removes my waterproof mascara and eyeliner in no time, without having to rub my eyes. The main ingredient is Japanese Camelia Oil that has been used for centuries by Japanese geishas to remove their makeup. The Oil also contains a special antioxidant blend that has anti aging benefits. I absolutely love it and although it’s pricey ($48.00 for 5.1 oz bottle) I say it’s worth every penny!

The second skincare favorite is Glamglow Dreamduo Overnight Transforming Treatment ($59.00). Glamglow DreamDuo Overnight Transforming Treatment is a nighttime dual moisturizer consisting of a pearl colored Dreamserum and gray colored Dreamseal that you apply one after another. The cream is rich in antioxidants, green coffee, green tea leaf extracts, vitamins and hyaluronic acid. It battles dryness, uneven skin texture and makes my skin plump, bouncy and baby soft. My favorite thing about it- its delicious fruity scent and light texture that quickly sinks into the skin.

And there you have it – Her and Makeup 2016 Beauty Favorites Part One. Each of the above mentioned product gets a huge seal of approval from me.

I enjoyed this post a lot, Agata! My friend is raving about the hourglass stick foundation. I’m actually enjoying the photoready one from revlon, but it gives a very sheer coverage. And the Voluminous primer is something I could really benefit from (I use Voluminous mascara, too).

    • Agata says:

I was debating between the Anastasia Beverly Hills foundation stick and Hourglass and a Sephora employee recommended the Hourglass and also their shade matched me much better than ABH.

I love that L’Oreal primer, now I kind of want to try lash primers from other brands. Have you ever tried any?

  3. shireenplatt says:

What an amazing list of favourites, Agata! I need to try that L’oreal Volumious primer, I love the mascara and would love to know if the primer works for me. And no kidding about the Marc Jacobs mascara, eh? I tried a deluxe sample and love it so much that I bought a full size.

    Very nice collection of products!
I wish I could get ahold of the Tarte concealer, it sounds amazing! And by the look of the wand I’m pretty sure I’d like the Marc Jacobs mascara, too.
Here are some of the best products I discovered last year:

The Best Foundation of 2016: La Roche-Posay Effaclar BB Blur
The Best Concealer of 2016: Sisley Phyto-cernes
The Best Mascara of 2016: PUPA Vamp
The Best Eyeshadow Palette of 2016: Chanel Candeur Et Experience quad and Victoria Beckham’s palette

The Best Drugstore Product of 2016: Catrice Camouflage Cream
The Best Skincare Product of 2016: hard to decide, I’ve tried so many that I loved last year!

    • Agata says:

Interesting that I have not tried any of the products you listed. Sisley and Pupa are much easier to find in Europe. I will have to look into these next time I go to Poland.

  5. Lulle.Beaumiroir says:

The Tatcha cleansing oil sounds really fantastic! I haven’t explored that brand at all yet. Here are my answers:

The Best Foundation of 2016: it’s a close call between Tarte Rainforest of the Sea and MUFE Ultra-HD
The Best Concealer of 2016: Clarins (not new but I discovered it this year)
The Best Mascara of 2016: Urban Decay Perversion (although my all-time favorite is still Lancome Grandiose)
The Best Eyeshadow Palette of 2016: Estee Lauder x Victoria Beckham
The Best Blush of 2016: Lancome cream blush from their spring collection
The Best Drugstore Product of 2016: Simple micellar water
The Best Skincare Product of 2016: the one I’ve been most impressed with is the Algenist blurring moisturizer with SPF30. It’s actually not that great as a moisturizer, but it’s the first truly MATTE sunscreen I’ve found!
